Inspired by a quotation by an Italian surrealist writer/artist Alberto Savinio who described the Mannequin in one of his works as a “Person without voice, without eyes and without face, made of pain, of passion and joy”. A statement that resonated with us and that we felt was an appropriate metaphor for the people around us and ourselves as well. Mannequins is a song about identity, and the search for one.

lyrics

mannequins all standing in a row, son
mannequins all standing in a row.
(in a row)

one’s got a new hat
one’s got a picture in the paper
one’s got his hands out.
(got his hands out)

what do you want?
what do you want?
what do you want?
what do you want?
you don’t even know.

can you try
to reach from the dark to see
that your voice
is not what it’s meant to be.

the crowds walk by
but you’re alone.

will you lose your mind
before it’s time
to run away.

your own reflection turns you petrified.
snakes unfurl with Mommy and Daddy’s eyes.

what do you want?
what do you want?
what do you want?
what do you want?
you don’t even know.

can you try
to reach from the dark to see
that your voice
is not what it’s meant to be.

you run and you run and you run
and you run and you run,
run for your damn lives.

you run and you run and you run
and you run and you run,
look what you’ve left behind.
